Through The Looking Glass: Thursday’s Children

Welcome to the Thursday’s Children Blog Hop, where writers come together to share whatever inspires them throughout their writing journey. Make sure to check out the other bloggers via the Link List at the bottom of this post. We’d love for you to join us!

When I was little, I would stare into a mirror, and wonder what really existed on the other side. Could I step through it, just as Alice had done, and enter a strange and fractured version of the world in which I lived? What about a puddle?

The possibility of a different world fascinated me, a world in which I could be me, only a me where I fought dragons or traveled on a giant turtle, swam with mermaids or became a pirate. A world in which anything was possible.

In books I discovered thousands of such worlds. Places where time-travel was possible, and straw could be spun into gold. Where genies lived in bottles, and elves lived in trees. But then the question arose, could I create such a world, one of my very own to share with others?

So I began to write, to shape and mold this new world, reaching deep into the depths of my imagination like so many before me had done. And in the process, I discovered others like me, those who’d asked themselves the same question. And what if, I thought, when we manifest our wishes and dreams onto paper, our new worlds, no longer confined within our minds, became real? Albert Einstein said, β€œYour imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions.” So basically, what we imagine, will one day come to pass.

THAT is what inspires me.

Tell me what reality you’re imagining…

  • Great post, Kate! πŸ˜€ Right now, I’m imagining vengeful faeries, gypsies…and a contract! πŸ˜‰

  • Oh, I love the quote by Einstein. Think I’ll have to ponder that for a while. Thanks for the inspiration.

    • I’m so glad you liked it πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by!

  • Okay, so THIS is where to leave a comment – it seems so far away from the post itself, lol. Sometimes I think that what I imagine will become my own personal “heaven”. Wouldn’t it be nice to be the architects of our afterlife?

    • That’s not a bad idea actually. I’ll have to start work on mine πŸ™‚

  • Love it… the process of world building β€” both planning it out, then bringing it to life on paper β€” definitely inspires me. It’s usually my starting place for a story. What is a cool world or alternate reality that I would like to play in?

  • Yay! So glad you’re joining us! I remember the old movie of Through the Looking Glass. I was fascinated and terrified of that dragon creature. OMG, childhood flashbacks! I also love the idea of there being an alternate or parallel universe we can step into. I think it’s why I’ve been such a “Fringe” fanatic. And, of course, the theme song of NeverEnding story is forever on a loop in my mind! Okay, I’ll stop oversharing now πŸ˜‰

    • OMG, YES! And Fringe and the NeverEnding story, I’m right there with you, lol πŸ™‚
